FreeRAINBOW PILGRIMS Archive Skills Training

Date: Saturday 12 May 2018
11am-4pm (Arrival by 10:45 for a prompt start at 11am)
Venue: The London Metropolitan Archives (check into reception downstairs & we will be taken up to the room together, let me know in case you are late)
Timetable:
11am – 12pm Induction visit to LMA & Behind the Scenes Tour
Aims: to learn about LMA’s services and collections to learn how to research at LMA
12 – 1pm Introduction to archives & Explore LGBTQ records
Aims: to gain a general understanding of archives and their importance
to learn about record types normally encountered through original examples
to gain an understanding of potential issues concerning use of original documents including ownership and copyright
1 – 2pm Lunch (lunch pack included for Rainbow Pilgrims volunteers)
2 – 3pm Potential Deposits
Aims: to gain knowledge of key fundamental archival principles and ethics
to know how to advise private individuals if they have records and want to know more about how to care for them
3 – 4pm Caring for and Organising Collections
Aims: to learn about how to care for and organise your collections
Volunteer Duties: You will be expected to hone your (new) skills and help with Rainbow Pilgrims archival work (eg cataloguing, preparing collection for deposit); minimum amount of volunteering hours 1.5/week for 4-8 weeks from 14 May 2018 onwards at the LMA and other London (office at W1T 4BE) or PC-home based locations.
You are also encouraged to work on maintenance of our other two collections Rainbow Jews and Twilight People, which have already been deposited.
As a Thank You to all (archive) volunteers, you will be invited to a special reception on 20 June 2018 at the London Metropolitan Archives.
